- By the end of August 1944 , Allied tanks were racing across northern France closing in on the borders of Hitler's Germany . But just when Londoners thought they could relax, the Nazi tyrant unleashed a new campaign of terror. On the 8th September , the first of a storm of V-2 missiles ruined down on the capital, killing hundreds. 'V' stood for vengeance and the V-2 was the first ballistic missile ever used in combat.
