Summary:
On 13 August 1961, the Communist government of East Germany began a great experiment - locking up an entire nation of 16 million people. A wall was built through the centre of Berlin which completed the isolation of the Communist East from the Capitalist West. But thousands of East Berliners refused to accept their fate. Over the next 28 years, more than 5,000 men, women and children risked their lives in extraordinary ways to reach freedom.
