- Summary:
- AMERICA'S ASTRONAUTS HONORED AS GOODWILL TOUR BEGINS: At the White House, President Johnson pins the NASA Exceptional Service Medal on Astronauts Cooper and Conrad as the four sons of Lt. Commander Charles Conrad turn the President's desk into a playground. Later, the Astronauts address members of the National Academy of Science before meeting with both Houses of Congress. Then the Gemini Twins leave for a goodwill tour which will begin in Greece and include six other nations. A THOUSAND YEARS OF FAITH: Barefoot Benedictine Monks lead pilgrims to the Abbey of Mont St. Michel to mark the thousandth year that the famed monastery has been a shrine to countless thousands of the faithful. Parts of the majestic pile date to the 18th Century, when an oratory was established after St. Michael was said to have appeared at the site. SPORTS HI-JINKS IN THE LOWLANDS: It's the annual pole vaulting tournament in The Netherlands, where contestants jump over canals (some do, some don't!) in the ancient tradition and honorable manner that was once used by the searchers of birds' eggs among the watery nesting sites. Some succeed...some do not, dunk you! ZIPPIE-ZOOM ON THE BOUNDING MAIN: Power boats invade the Island of Cowes...headquarters for sleek, sailing yachts, for the 16th International Offshore Race. 50 boats start out...but not many are spartan enough to take the tough pounding of the sea during the 198-mile test. For the first time, an AMERICAN craft, "BRAVE MOPPIE," wins the race.
