- Summary:
- BEN BELLA DEPOSED: Overnight, there's a new strongman in Algeria. Colonel Houari Boumedienne, President Ben Bella's right hand, turned against his friend and boss in a pre-dawn coup and assumed power. Meanwhile, delegates to a pending Afro-Asian conference in Algiers were in confusion about their scheduled meeting. One delegate remarked that it was like preparing to go to the theatre and not knowing whether anyone had printed the tickets yet. WILL ROGERS HOSPITAL EXPANDS: The Board of Directors of the theatrical hospital at Saranac Lake, New York, hears glowing reports of its progress and breaks ground for a new medical library and study center named in memory of Abe Montague, a former President of the hospital. "THE ART OF LOVE" HAS PREMIERE: There's a parade through the heart of Chicago to herald the world premiere of Ross Hunter's new picture - "THE ART OF LOVE." One of the stars of the picture, Ethel Merman, is on hand, and Ethel says she's never had so much fun. SPORTS GARY PLAYER TAKES OPEN: The U.S. Golf Open goes into overtime as Gary Player battles Kel Nagle in a playoff round. Five strokes ahead on the 8th hole, Player breezes in and announces he is donating his purse to Cancer Research and the development of junior golfers. G.P. is not interested in the money... He only wants the title. AMERICAN DRIVER WINS AT LE MANS: American-born Masten Gregory of Kansas City - co-pilot in an Italian car - wins the French race with Jochen Rindt of Austria. The 24-hour drive grind covers just a bit less than 3,000 miles. Taking the lead 2 ½ hours from the finish, they have little trouble in beating the 11-American-made cars, only one of which finished.
