- 2002 was a year of disaster, war, and hostage-taking. In March, the battle to overthrow the Taliban was declared officially over. But the hunt for Osama Bin Laden continued. The German resort of Lake Constance was the scene of a massive disaster when 71 people died after a Russian plane travelling from Moscow to Barcelona collided with a cargo plane over Southern Germany. Meanwhile, a self-proclaimed Chechen suicide squad held hundreds of people hostage in a theater in Russia, after killing one woman who tried to escape.
