Summary:
Gifted pupils are those with a particular or potential ability in one or more academic subjects, while the term talented is used for pupils with an aptitude and potential in the performing or visual arts, sport or PE. It is often difficult to meet the needs of Gifted and Talented pupils in the classroom and to ensure they remain challenged and on course to reach their full potential. This programme focuses on Selwyn Primary School in Newham, east London, where the approach is primarily an inclusive one, differentiating its gifted pupils within whole class settings. Teachers from Year 1 to Year 6 demonstrate a variety of techniques and reveal what lies behind their approach. These include guided reading, asking challenging questions, posing open-ended problems, encouraging analytical and scientific thinking. They also use their gifted and talented pupils as facilitators and lead-learners in mixed groups.
