- Summary:
- The Suffragettes, Part 2: At the end of the first decade of the 20th century, British women were still disenfranchised. The suffragettes stepped up their militant campaign, drawing attention to their cause through acts of civil disobedience, arson and bombings. Hanan Ashrawi: Middle Eastern politics is complicated and often murky. It inspires passionate argument and deeply held enmities and loyalties. It is also largely conducted by men. With the odd exception. The most notable is perhaps Hanan Ashrawi, a Palestinian academic and political activist who has been deeply involved in political causes in her homeland for over 30 years. Steven Spielberg: According to legendary director David Lean, Steven Spielberg makes movies to 'entertain his teenage self'. And it's a formula that's proved gold for the most successful filmmaker of all time. Spielberg made his first films as a child on an 8-millimetre camera and quickly graduated to directing TV series for universal. He hit paydirt with jaws. As well being a huge commercial success it won three Oscars. J.K. Rowling: In the world of children's books there are successful authors... and then there is JK Rowling (pron. Rolling). It is estimated that to date she has sold nearly 400 million copies of her books. To put this into perspective, that's around the same number as Enid Blyton. Blyton, however, produced 800 titles over 40 years. JK Rowling achieved those incredible sales figures with just seven novels in ten years. Roger Bannister: On the 6th of May 1954, a young medical student called Roger Bannister sprinted his way into the history books by running a mile in under four minutes. The momentous event occurred on the Iffley road track in Oxford, and time hasn't dimmed Bannister's memory of the race.
