- Summary:
- On November 4th, the year's main event unfolded, as Islamic student militants overran the American Embassy in Iran and held 52 of the Embassy's staff hostage for a terrifying 444 days. It was the beginning of a crisis which lasted until the end of President Jimmy Carter's term in office. The siege, during the chaotic aftermath of the Iran/Islamic revolution, had a dramatic effect on domestic politics, and damaged relations between the United States and Iran for decades.
