- Summary:
- In 1959 Fidel Castro overthrew Cuban dictator Baptiste to become prime minister of embattled Cuba. The country remained under Castro's control for nearly half a century. On January 8, Castro's army rolled victoriously into Havana, amid crowds of jubilant supporters, and eight days later was sworn in as Prime Minister. Castro's political beginnings were in Havana where he offered legal advice to poor Cubans. At the age of 25 he ran for parliament, but just before the election Baptiste took over and established a dictatorship.
