NEWARK RIOTS Five days of race riots leaves Newark in a virtual state of siege. 24 are killed, 18 hundred wounded, 14 hundred arrested. Police, State Troopers, and National Guardsmen exchange shots with rooftop and window snipers; stores are wrecked, burned, and looted; cars overturned. Governor Hughes terms it "open rebellion." MISS UNIVERSE 20-year old Sylvia Louise Hitchock, "Miss USA," wins the "Miss Universe" title in Miami Beach. 55 beauties from throughout the world competed. Runnerup: "Miss Venezuela," DANANG AIR BASE A Vietcong rocket attack kills eight Americans, wounds 173, and destroys II aircraft at Danang Airbase, a vital Marine operation headquarters. The nighttime attack came from surrounding mountains. Fires started from secondary blasts by bombs and fuel. FASHIONS Young Italian designed Heinz Riva shows his fall and winter line in Rome's Piazza di Spagna. Everything from cocktail-length raincoat capes to brocade and silk evening dresses are on view. BRITISH OPEN GOLF 44-year old Argentinean Roberto De Vicenzo wins the British Open with a four-round 278, beating Jack Nicklaus, defending champ, by two strokes° It's Roberto's first win in ten tries over nineteen years.
