- Summary:
- VIET ACTION In back-and-forth fighting, U.S. airbases are blasted by Vietcong; U.S. Marines clobber the enemy at Hills 861 and 881; Marine pilots blast Cong missile sites violating the neutral zone; and Marine ground troops clear a Vietcong village. In all, close to 12 hundred enemy killed. LIVERPOOL CATHEDRAL The world's newest Catholic Cathedral, in Liverpool, erected at a cost of seven million dollars. It's arena-style, 290 feet in diameter. It holds 2,600 worshippers, all with a clear view of the main altar. ISRAELI ANNIVERSARY The 19th anniversary of the end of British rule in Palestine is celebrated by Israel against a background of tenseness in the Middle East. Syria and the United Arab Republic exchange threats with Israel; all three permit border military "build-ups." JAPANESE ROYALTY Prince Akihito and his wife, Princess Michiko, come to Buenos Aires for a four-day state visit. They arrive from Peru...and will next visit Brazil. The reception and troop-review occurs at the airport. FILM STUDIO FIRE Wind-whipped flames destroy ten acres and one million dollars worth of TV and film sets at Universal City Studios in Hollywood. Among those destroyed: "Laramie"..."Laredo" and "The Virginian"... as well as the European Street set for the classic war film, "All Quiet on the Western Front." Production not affected; Studio Tours continue; sets are immediately rebuilt. IKE'S PAINTINGS Former President Eisenhower shows some of his paintings at a New York exhibition. They included still life, landscapes, and portraits; one of them, Churchill. Ike calls his art just "daubs." HORSE SHOW Anton Ebben of Holland wins the Grand Prize at the International Riding Tournament in Wiesbaden, Germany. America's Kathy Kusner gives a great performance but one "fault" plunges her to fourth place. Second, West Germany; third, Japan. FROG-JUMPING Mark Twain's mythical "Calaveras County" and the famous leaping-frog competition has a modern counterpart in a U.S. Army-sponsored preliminary in Frankfurt, Germany. The winner: 8-year old Jason Waterhouse whose frog, "King," leaped over ten feet. They'll both go to California for the finals.
