Summary:
This programme examines how the Young Apprentice (YA) scheme, launched in September 2004, is working in practice by following two Young Apprentice pupils. They are both based in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, whose pre-existing partnership between schools, FE colleges & LEAs has helped them to succeed in their initial bid for 30 places on the course. The YA scheme is seen as an innovative solution to broadening vocational choices in KS4. Aimed at academically bright pupils, it includes 50 days of work experience. 'The Experience' follows the pupils involved and sees how much they are accomplishing through the scheme. Key staff discuss issues around delivering a curriculum in more then one institution and how to ensure pupils don't miss out on core subject lessons. This programme will be of particular interest to schools who have recently been successful in bidding for places on the scheme and schools who hope to take part in the scheme in the future.
