- Summary:
- MEDAL OF HONOR TO VIETNAM HERO: Our nation's highest award for heroism is awarded, posthumously, to Private First-Class Milton Lee Olive of Chicago, in ceremonies in the Rose Garden at the White House. In attendance are President Johnson, the dead soldier's parents, members of his family and two of the four soldiers whose lives he saved when he flung himself on a Vietcong grenade. QUEEN OPENS PARLIAMENT: Amidst pomp and pageantry, Queen Elizabeth opens Parliament on her 40th birthday. The Royal Court and Diplomatic Corps watch as all the tradition of this 700-year-Old law-making body is on display. In the Queen's speech, she outlines a program of strong domestic economy, increased efforts to maintain world peace, and a step up in world trade. JACKIE AND GRACE AT CHARITY FETE: Mrs. Jacqueline Kennedy and the Rainiers of Monaco arrive in Seville for the famous "Feria"....Debutante Ball. Some 61 debutantes from over half a dozen countries are introduced to the guests in a magnificent setting, the patio of a famous Seville Palace Pilatos House. SPORTS KENTUCKY DERBY PREVIEW: Two thrilling horse races, one in California and one in New York, set the tempo for what should be a thrilling Kentucky Derby this year. At Albany, California, "Tragniew" wins the $75,000 added California Derby. At New York's Aqueduct track, a so-called "problem" colt, "Amberoid", comes from the rear of the pack to sweep across the line, a two length distance winner. CHAMPIONSHIP AUTO RACE: The Trenton Speedway is the scene of the first tune-up in the East, pointing toward the famous Indianapolis "500" on Memorial Day. Only 102 miles of a scheduled 150-mile race are run after a steady drizzle develops into heavy rain and the officials declare the track dangerous. Mario Andretti, after leading the entire race, has to make a pit stop and in that time loses the lead....and the checkered flag...to Roger Ward.
