- MISS AMERICA: 19-year-old Jane Anne Jayroe, "Miss Oklahoma" wins the "Miss America" title at Atlantic City. The runners-up are Misses California, Tennessee, Ohio, and New Hampshire. Jane Anne's ambition is to become a musical conductor. WORLD'S BIGGEST SHIP: The 209-thousand-ton tanker, Idemitsu Maru, is launched in Yokohama, Japan. It's the biggest ship ever built by man. It'll carry oil from Persia to Japan. It took seven months and 15 million dollars to build her. Next year, she may have an even bigger sister-ship! BRITISH AIR SHOW: The 1966 Farnborough Air Show, open-air shop window of the British Aircraft Industry, displays airplanes of every design for every use. Buyers represent nations around the world. Everything from jet airliners to 1-seat helicopters are shown....and flown. SPORTS TENNIS: CHAMPIONSHIPS: At Forest Hills, New York, Maria Bueno of Brazil beats Nancy Richey of Texas to take the U.S. Women's title.
