Summary:
TRAGIC EXODUS: RED CHINA EXPELS EIGHT NUNS: Eight European nuns, accused of spying in Peking, are expelled from Red China. One collapses at the border and is taken across on a baggage handcart. Later, she dies. Their 100-year-old school for diplomat's children in Peking is mobbed and damaged by Red Youth Guards who hate all foreign influences. VERWOERD ASSASSINATION: The assassination of South African Prime Minister Hendrik Verwoerd recalls an earlier attempt on his life in 1960. A wealthy, white farmer fires two bullets into the Prime Minister's head at a Fair in Johannesburg. Verwoerd was the architect of the controversial "apartheid" plan of race separation. S.S. HANSEATIC AFIRE: The German liner Hanseatic burns at her Hudson River Pier in New York City, causing extensive damage and injuring seven firemen. Had the flames broke out at sea, it would have been a major catastrophe. 400 passengers change European voyage plans. BLUE ANGELS PLANE CRASH: At Toronto, thousands witness the fiery death of a United States Navy "Blue Angel" jet daredevil. 31-year-old Lt.-Comdr. Dick Oliver of Fort Mill, South Carolina, loses control of his plane, crashes, and is instantly killed at the Canadian National Exhibition. SPORTS INTERNATIONAL BICYCLE RACE: In West Germany bicycling racing is a popular sport. Forty women cyclists from throughout the world compete in a (5-mile street race won by Belgium's Yvonne Reynders. Meanwhile, Germany's Rudi Altig nips Anquetil of France at the finish of the 500-mile race. WATER POLE JUMPING: In Holland, the pole-jumping National Championships bring out the best in this unique event. Unlike pole vaulting, a running start, a flying leap over a ditch filled with water, a grab at a pole, and a hoped-for dry landing on the other side is the object.
