- Summary:
- 60 NATIONS JOIN IN WORLD TRADE FAIR In New York, 60 nations join in the first United States World Trade Fair, a vast international exposition that showcases industrial goods, crafts, and agricultural products from all over the globe, and attracts record throngs to the Coliseum. SIR WINSTON CHURCHILL, asked by a Japanese envoy to support Japan's plea to stop planned H-bomb tests in the Pacific, replies with a statement of support for Britain's policy. CULINARY ARTS are on display in Chicago, a dazzling display of superb skill in cooking and decoration by chefs and party cooks. One highlight, a "lobster symphony." PRINCESS MARGARET of Holland, dedicates a memorial to the Netherlands' 3500 merchant seamen who lost their lives during World War II-a 148 foot harbor-side edifice. HAT FASHIONS inspired by Spring-and showing a touch of spring fever-are shown in Vancouver. The group includes the biggest hat in the world, closely rivaled in giddiness and gayety by all the others. SPORTS KIDS' BOXING at Annapolis, an annual event at the Naval Academy, brings out a game crew of Navy juniors-who swing into action with the real navy spirit, firing heroic salvos and broadsides, going down with flying colors. WHITE WATER WIZARDS challenge the boiling rapids of the surging MacKenzie River. Over 100 motley craft, manned by daredevil oarsmen, defy streaming currents, and eddies that stall craft in mid-current, an amazing sight to see.
