- LORD HOME NAMED: A new Prime Minister takes up residence at No.: 10 Downing Street, after a power struggle that threatened to split Britain's Conservative Party. Lord Hailsham, Minister of Science; R.A. Butler, Deputy Prime Minister under Harold MacMillan and Reginald Maudling, Chancellor of the Exchequer were all candidates for the job. However, Lord Home is named by Queen Elizabeth after she visits Mr. MacMillan in the hospital where he had undergone an operation. Lord Home and his party are facing a crucial election. DROUGHT CRISIS: Blazing sun beats down on parched earth from Maine to Texas as the nation suffers one of the worst droughts on record. Fires blaze in 21 States - fires by the hundreds ravaging woodlands that are tinder dry. Rainfall has been negligible for a month and since January precipitation has been only 54% of normal. New York City's reservoirs are filled to only 1/3 of capacity - a predicament faced by every major city. The Croton System - a New York reserve - is so low that revolutionary farms are visible for the first time in decades. SPORTS FOOTBALL WISCONSIN SNEAKS BY IOWA: IOWA spells "thrilling" today as the Buckeyes take on undefeated Wisconsin. The Iowa line proves a surprise as they hold Wisconsin and force them to settle for a field goal in the first quarter. Iowa takes the lead with a T D as the second half opens but Wisconsin comes back with a score and wind up on top - 10 to 7. SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA 32 OHIO STATE 3 The Southern California powerhouse sparked by Pete Beathard at quarterback, rolls over Ohio State to hand them their first defeat of the season. Ohio tries desperate aerials in the final quarter but an alert Southern California intercepts one to score anew.
