- ATOM TEST BAN: The limited nuclear test ban treaty becomes official in the White House Treaty Room - the same room where the peace protocol was signed to end the Spanish-American War. In the presence of official witnesses and Congressional leaders, the President hails the agreement with Russia with a note of caution, calling it the first fruit of hope. SPORTS FOOTBALL Michigan invades the Champaign home grounds of Illinois for a clash that's a cliff-hanger all the way. Northwestern goes out in front with a pass play and then misses the conversion attempt and, that proves the BIG, BIG point of the day. Illinois gets a touchdown and the extra point and both teams make field goals. But that one kick meant the difference. Final score: Illinois l0 - NORTHWESTERN 9 BASEBALL THE DODGERS The Dodgers take the Yankees in four straight games and while there may be no joy in New York - there's bedlam in Los Angeles. In the third game Junior Gilliam is brought home by Tommy Davis for the only score of the game and Don Drysdale goes on to silence the mighty Yankee bats. In the final game Frank Howard homers to put the Dodgers ahead and Mickey Mantle comes back to tie it up with another four-bagger. Then, Gilliam reaches third on an error and is brought home with a sacrifice fly to center by Willy Davis. Then Sandy Koufax, hero of the first game, makes matchsticks out of the mighty Yankee bats. All Hail The Delirious Dodgers!
