WEST BERLIN VOTES FOR FREEDOM In the face of Khrushchev's ultimatum, West Berlin's regularly scheduled municipal elections become a plebiscite in which the free city, 110 miles behind the Iron Curtain, routs local Reds in a resounding declaration of staunch defiance. MASS FUNERAL FOR FIRE VICTIMS IN CHICAGO: Last rites are held for 27 of the 92 who perished in Chicago's disastrous school fire. Cardinal Spellman presides at the Solemn Pontifical Requim Mass which is attended by 6,100 persons. ISRAEL-SYRIA BORDER CLASH: Israeli border communities along an 11-mile sector are blasted by Syrian artillery. The Soviet-made guns hurl 300 shells, in the worst Arab-Israeli border incident in months. GLAMOROUS GRANDMAS: Why, Grandma! What a svelte figure you have. In a British contest for Glamorous Grandmothers, some big, bad, wolf-bait decorates the stage! Shades of Red Riding Hood ROYAL LOVEBIRDS: Tennis-courting again are Japan's Prince Akihito and his commoner fiancée, Michiko Shoda, playing mixed doubles at the scene where the Prince met and wooed his bride-to-be. IMPERIAL BALL: Guests of honor at the East Coast edition of the Imperial Ball - for sweet Charity, are Princess Grace and Prince Rainier. The gala evening is marred when a royal toe is trampled! SPORTS In Chicago, hardy harriers set off on the 10,000 meter course for the National AAU cross-country Championship in near-zero weather, Knit caps, ear-muffs and long U-wear make unique track suits.
