Chiang Kai Shek watches 60,000 men in amphibious maneuvers that dramatically demonstrate the defense strength of Formosa. MacMILLAN VISITS POPE JOHN XXIII: Britain's Prime Minister MacMillan and Foreign Secretary Lord Hume are received by Pope John XXIII, following two days of talks with Italian government officials in Rome. EIRE MOURNS HEROS: Eire mourns 9 soldiers slain in a Congo ambush while serving with United Nations forces. In the solemn state funeral, the flag of the world organization for the first time drapes the caskets of soldiers fallen in its service, martyrs to peace. FOOTBALL NAVY WINS 17 - 12 AS CADET RALLY FAILS: At Philadelphia, one of the most stirring games in the history of the interservice football classic. Trailing 17 - 0 at half-time, Army stages a fierce rally that closes the gap to 17 - 12. Then, in the closing minutes, a final drive stalls when a fumbled pitch-out costs Army 14 yards, and a final desperation pass is intercepted on the goal line by Navy's amazing Joe Bellino who runs the ball back 45 yards to bring Navy out of the storm, to a 17 - 12 victory and an Orange Bowl bid. . . .
