Summary:

Research shows that increasing parental involvement in their child's education has a significant effect on attainment. The initiatives taken by Moulsecoomb Primary School offer inspiring examples and strategies to encourage parents to get involved. When Headteacher Charles Davies first arrived at the school five years ago, his aim was to raise pupil attainment. Central to this was the need to get parents involved, but many parents on the Moulsecoomb estate had negative feelings about their own schooling and education in general. To help them overcome their fear, prejudice and apathy, he called in the help of community worker Lucy Rayner to help to create a more attractive and welcoming school environment. The project to involve parents has now been running for a year and has successfully initiated fifteen different parent-run activities, including fitness groups, cookery and dance clubs and an accredited course to support children's learning.
