- Summary:
- McNAMARA REPORTS ON VIETNAM: Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara tells a news conference that the United States intends to step up bombings until all key supply lines from the north are knocked out. Showing photos of some of the 24 bridges demolished so far, the Defense Secretary rules out the possibility of using nuclear weapons. Displaying a Red Chinese machine gun, Mr. McNamara says that regular North Vietnamese troops are now in the south. LYNDON B. JOHNSON CROWNS LUCI AT AZALEA FETE: It's a cool 48 degrees in Norfolk, Virginia, but the Queen of the Azalea Festival warms things up with her radiant smile. The Queen is Luci Baines Johnson and her father (the President) does the crowning. Then a kiss for the Queen from her most loyal subject, the President! SPORTS INDIANAPOLIS CURTAIN-RAISER: The men who will take to the tracks at Indianapolis in the famed Five Hundred get a work-out at Trenton, New Jersey, in a scheduled 100-mile race. Rain reduces the grind to 87 laps as A. J. Foyt, the favorite, is forced out and Jim McElreath is an easy winner. He will be at Indianapolis when the great race is televised on MCA closed circuit television Memorial Day. CELTICS TAKE SEVENTH STRAIGHT TITLE: The Boston Celtics get off to a bouncy start as they get going against the Los Angeles Lakers for the National Basketball Crown. The Celtics need this game for their seventh straight title and they take the title easily....scoring 42 points in the last period for a record. The Celtics give Boston something to brag about. Never mind those famous Baked Beans....
