Some experts claim that children should learn about sexual differences and appropriate behaviour from as young as nursery age. Many schools are resisting in response to pressure from parents and the media. 'Early Sex Education' investigates the policies implemented by three different schools and sets the scene for discussion on the age at which sex education should be taught. At Shepherd School headteacher David Stewart explains the importance of teaching pupils about their bodies from nursery age, a view shared by sex education pioneer Dylis Went. At another primary school, life cycles and reproduction are taught as part of the science curriculum in Year 6, complimented by four lessons from a school nurse. Head teacher Paul Heery is satisfied that this is all the sex education pupils need until secondary school. At Sketchley Hill School, the school recognises that sex education is important for children and begins teaching pupils at Year 5.
