Summary:
Headteacher Steve Davies is pioneering novel ways to encourage fathers to take a more active role in their children's education. He maintains that positive paternal involvement in their children's learning leads to improved exam results, better school attendance and better behaviour. The Dads Matter film highlights Steve's inspirational work with the fathers whose children attend Coopers Lane Primary School in the London Borough of Lewisham. A local pub is the unlikely venue for the monthly group meetings. The neutral territory provides a relaxed atmosphere where the dads can explore how they can help contribute to their children's education. Many of the dads are scared of coming into the school, seeing it as a mother's job, especially at primary age. They find it difficult to actively engage with their own children's learning. They think that is what teachers are there for. Dads Matter aims to break down the barriers and gently encourage fathers into the classroom.
