- In the history of cinema, there are mythical director-composer pairs, such as Sergio Leone and Ennio Morricone, Steven Spielberg and John Williams, or Alfred Hitchcock and Bernard Herrmann. It is to the latter that techno producer Zadig and pianist Thomas Enhco pay tribute in this new episode of the Variations series, produced by the Sourdoreille collective and La Compagnie des Indes, bringing together an electronic DJ-producer and an instrumentalist for each part. . Herrmann's compositions greatly amplify the frightening nature of Hitchcock's images, as we see clearly here, where the duo have chosen to draw freely on the soundtracks of the machiavellian Cold Sweats (Vertigo) and the disturbing Psychosis. To do this, the brilliant Thomas Enhco worked tirelessly to transcribe, by hand, the orchestral score into a piano part, which he then copied into software so that the sequences constructed with Zadig were harmonious. With this onerous task accomplished, the two artists were able to construct their hybrid work. Zadig, a key figure of the Parisian techno scene, known for his powerful sets, shapes electronic textures and rhythms on which the young piano prodigy Thomas Enhco lays down his remarkable jazz improvisations. Machines and piano come together in the service of an eerie musical narration, in the style of Herrmann, which makes you want to dive back into Hitchcock's filmography.
