Summary:
Riffs and brass solos on the intoxicating base of percussion and the krautrock punctuations of electronic keyboard set the tone of the musical references of Jungle By Night, the group of nine Dutch musicians founded in 2009 and which already has several albums to its credit. It is from Fela Kuti (the musicians of Jungle By Night have already performed with former Nigerian members of Fela Kuti's Egypt 80) and the Ethiopian Mulatu Astatké that they draw their inspiration and there is no wonder they were lauded by Tony Allen who considered them, according to the rumor, "the future of Afrobeat." There is a dance floor energy to this concert, a music which combines juicy grooves, boosted cumbia, torrid funk and jazz elements; but to simplify, we could qualify the whole as a mixture of white-boy highlife drifting cheerfully towards the purest afrobeat. These young musicians, who are not lacking in talent, must give the better of themselves in their stage performances rather than during their studio recordings. It's because the music they perform requires interaction with an audience on the verge of hysteria in the scorching heat of a club. The recording of their concert at the Pelpass Festival suggests that the public would have appreciated sharing their infectious energy in the heat of a club and on a dance floor. Philippe Lesage.
