- Edited by Francis Falceto, the compilation Noise & Chill Out attests to the richness of Ethiopian repertoires and their ability to adapt to different rhythms and contemporary styles. Presented in April 2022 at the Jacques Brel hall in Pantin as part of the Banlieues Bleues festival, Kutu confirms this phenomenon. Launched by Théo Ceccaldi, this project not only concentrates the aforementioned extraordinary musical aggregate but also instills a sense of mystery that goes back to the dawn of time. Surrounded by the Ethiopian singers Hewan Gebrewold and Haleluya Tekletsadik, and by the drummer Cyril Atef (Bumcello, CongopunQ), the young French violinist delivers a bewitching journey on the stage of the Ile-de-France. Following in the footsteps of Beta Israel diva Ester Rada, Kutu impresses with the inaugural track and its electro-jazz fueled by the energy of the Great Rift; sets the tone with "Abaydar" a hypnotic theme punctuated by catchy scansions; and drives the point home via "Walaïta," a retro-futuristic afro-funk track driven by the imperial timbres of Hewan and Haleluya. Filmed with care by Rémi Vinet, this set by Kutu is punctuated by the comments of the principal player. This editorial approach completes a precious reference for anyone wishing to discover the new local jazz scene and its many faces. Vincent Caffiaux.
