Summary:
Malian supergroup brilliantly blurs the line between acoustic and electric worlds. Shut your eyes and you would be forgiven for thinking this was an electric group fronted by a guitarist with his foot pressed down hard on an effects pedal. However, Malian six-piece BKO uses traditional instruments such as djeli n'goni, a forerunner of the western banjo, in a thoroughly modern way. They are 'plugged in' to provide all the power, momentum and distortion associated with western technology all the while retaining the rich, often haunting character of African music handed down by griots and hunters over centuries. BKO burst on to the international music scene in 2015 with the release of its thrilling studio debut Bamako Today and three years later consolidated that impact with the equally impressive sophomore cd *Mali Foli Coura*. The band features the commanding, charismatic lead vocal of Fassara Sacko while djeli n'goni player Mamadou Diabate proves to be a dazzling soloist, launching into lengthy, burning improvisations that generate no end of heat and light in songs that move seamlessly from deep melancholy to sweet joy and all points in between. Kevin Le Gendre.
