- Summary:
- Rough, rugged and raw. Bombino's sound doesn't so much burst into life as crackle right through the air like an electric current. His lead guitar lines are a major feature of a tightly marshaled 4-piece that plays a kind of desert blues not a million miles from the likes of Tinariwen and Terakaft, but which nonetheless has its own marks of distinction. Bombino has been writing songs about the identity politics and culture of the Tuareg people of Niger for over a decade, and, as this concert shows, he has lost none of the passion that brought him to prominence in the first place. His 2011 album *Agadez* highlighted an important new champion of African music and his reputation as a fiery live performer has grown over time. This red hot gig reminds us that Bombino is a sensitive vocalist as well as an excellent guitarist, whose rousing, invigorating delivery unleashes a feverish energy that does not leave audiences unmoved. Kevin Le Gendre.
