- Summary:
- Hervé Samb is a virtuoso Senegalese jazz guitarist, composer and producer. With no formal training, the Dakar native has travelled the world in search of new sounds and new experiences, and it has paid off big time. At the age of 35, he has already participated in more than one hundred albums and been part of many prestigious collaborations with the likes of Marcus Miller, Salif Keita, Amadou & Mariam, Oumou Sangaré, Meshell Ndegeocello, David Murray and many others. At this performance, he introduces the audience to his latest album, Terenga - which means 'hospitality' in Wolof - a project that occupies a very special place in his heart. It blends the traditional repertoire of Senegalese music with many modern influences: jazz, fusion, soul and others. He goes back to his roots, reconnecting with childhood friend Pathe Jassi (the bass player) and creates a new musical genre: "jazz sabar" (the sabar being a percussive musical genre as well as a traditional Senegalese dance). It is a singular and luminous marriage, which tints jazz standards with warm and soft colours, and which, together with the protean guitar of a prodigy, reveals many more influences than we'd expect.
