- Summary:
- The virtuoso oud player, Mohamed Abozekry, is accompanied for this 2017 concert at the Moods Jazz Club by Lofty Abaza on violin, Hany Bedair and Wassim Halal on riqq and dehola (traditional percussion) and Mohammed Farag on ney (reed flute). Abozekry began touring with the Orient Orchestra, conducted by Naseer Shamma, at the age of 13, graduated as a soloist and oud teacher at the age of 15, and was named the best oud player in the Arab world once he became an adult. Quite the portfolio. It has all lead to crossover collaborations with internationally renowned artists such as Randy Weston, Billy Harper, and Alex Blake amongst others. The title of his album, which is featured here - "Karkadé" - takes its name from the hibiscus flower in Egyptian. Released at the end of 2016, it brings together elements such as popular music, Egyptian classical music, and the music of the Sufi dervishes. In this concert, Abozekry shows us his exceptional dexterity and speed on his favourite instrument, and the result is utterly bewitching. Anaïs Christidis Guillemard.
