Summary:
Talented but also curious, the American saxophonist Lee Konitz is associated with some of the great milestones of African-American music, starting with Birth Of The Cool, Miles Davis' manifesto. If his style was later popularized by the West Coast movement with the likes of Art Pepper and Gerry Mulligan, the open-mindedness he showed allowed him to approach other jazz spheres, at the crossroads of the European and free scenes. The captivating documentary Solos - The Jazz Sessions finely synthesizes these multiple faces. Recorded here as a soloist, the maestro of the alto unveils the vast palette of his repertoire without any frills. This is the case with "Kary's Trance," a musical track taken from the superb Inside Hi-Fi; with "The Rebirth Of The Cool," a nod to Miles Davis' historical nonet; and even with "Cherokee," Ray Noble's standard adapted by names as varied as Ella Fitzgerald and Kamasi Washington. Intimate and ultimately unpublished, this session is recommended for fans of Lee Konitz, fans of the sacrosanct saxophone, and more generally for fans of fluid and authentic melodies. Vincent Caffiaux.
