- Summary:
- In his 17-year tenure with Blue Note Records, alto saxophonist Greg Osby recorded 15 significant albums till his departure in 2006. Still early in his career, he was originally signed by Blue Note head Bruce Lundvall. In my Lundvall biography, Playing by Ear, Osby told me that this was where he needed to be to fulfill moving his career forward. "Bruce promised me that there would be no label intervention of what I wanted to do," he said. "I could document what I saw fit...That was a luxury position." In 2005, his last year with Blue Note before starting his own label Inner Circle, Osby showed his prowess as an adventurous alto saxophonist as well as a creative improviser on the jazz series "Solo The Jazz Sessions," produced by Daniel K. Berman and recorded in a studio at Berkeley Church in Toronto, Canada. Osby puts on a dynamic and at times exciting performance, opening with his tune "Mentor's Praise." It begins soulful with long saxophone lines that he then embellishes with his alto dazzle. His range is remarkable, going from low notes to the upper ranges of his instrument. During his playing, Osby warbles in riffs and then embarks to high-piercing rhythmic spurts. Intermixed into the live show are several short interviews with Osby who explains that it was his lifelong sense of curiosity that led him to explore his vision with his alto's possibilities. He talks about stepping across genres and not being bound by restrictions. "The world is my stage, the world is my canvas," he says. In this video, Osby paints superb soundscapes. Dan Ouellette.
