Summary:
On 7 November 2015 at the 18th annual Blues sur Seine festival, charismatic guitarist/lead vocalist Peter Solo, along with his talented five-member band Vaudou Game, treated Théâtre de la Nacelle in d'Aubergenville to a rollicking good-time set of Afro-pop meets rhythm & blues music. Solo is from the West African country of Togo, where the practice of trance-inducing voodoo originated. He made bold moves to transform the Togolese music into Afro-funk by melding funk, blues and rhythm & blues into the mix. James Brown certainly influenced Solo who frequently yelped "good God" into his vocal delivery like JB often excitedly did. Solo's music inspired dancing (witness the crowd at the theater in the aisles grooving to the funk) as well as proved infectious in its full-tilt energy. The tight band was comprised of Vicente Fritis on keyboards, Gerôme Bartolome on saxophone and percussion, Guilhem Paraguel on trombone and percussion, Simon Bacroix on bass and vocals, and Hafid Zouaoli on drums. It's a band that deserves a wider audience as evidenced here in its spirited show. Dan Ouellette.
