Summary:
Rhoda Scott is an absolute legend. Prized in mod circles (the first part of her discography is to be rediscovered) then a student in the prestigious class of Nadia Boulanger, the American organist has left her mark on the soul and jazz repertoires of the second part of the twentieth century. Recorded in August 2021 in Ramatuelle, the barefoot lady is surrounded by the Ladies All-Star, her feminine project featuring various talents such as drummer Anne Paceo and saxophonist Sophie Alour. Rhoda Scott generously gives pride of place to themes taken from "Escapade," based on a composition by the promising Airelle Besson; devilishly attacks a groovy "Short Night Blues," with particularly impressive brass solos; and ventures into the realm of balladry thanks to the atmospheric and nevertheless virtuoso "Les Châteaux de Sable." Recognizable among thousands, the phrasing of the Francophile musician unrolls its share of sophisticated arrangements. A textbook case, the significant "Golden Age" attests to a beautiful complicity with the saxophonist Lisa Cat-Berro. And the standard "My Favorite Things," in duo with the Alsatian violinist Aurore Voilqué, ends this concert with very effective nostalgic touch. Recommended! Vincent Caffiaux.
