- Summary:
- Two generations (that of the fifty-somethings Bethmann and Bojan Z and that of the forty-somethings Legnini and Trotignon), two grand pianos and two Fender Rhodes and games of musical chairs to go from duos to pieces for eight hands. Like a private music lesson but with four voices so amateur pianists can study profitably, in addition to the blossoming of ideas and the sense of improvisation of the pianists, the different postures for holding one's head in front of the keyboard, the fingerings and how each one ends up inhabiting a style and a sound. The repertoire wanders between imperishable classic themes of Parker (a reading like a cubist painting of "Barbados"), Ellington (the play of rather contemporary rhythms and timbres on "Caravan"), Van Heusen and Burke ("It Could Happen to You"), Antonio Carlos Jobim (duet of Bojan Z and Trotignon on "Zingaro" / "Retrato Em Branco e Preto"), and personal compositions of the participants (a magnificent "Boda Boda" with the latin colors of Legnini; "Moods" of Trotignon; "La Lenteur de Pierre" de Bethmann; "Seeds" by Bojan Z). Also noteworthy is "Chorinho" by Lyle Mays, Pat Metheny's keyboardist accomplice who, like Metheny, loved Brazilian music to the point of composing a delicious little 'choro' (chorinho), a genre whose history parallels that of jazz as perceived by the musicians of New Orleans. Philippe Lesage.
