- Summary:
- Bill Frisell, guitar in hand, a multitude of pedals at his feet, admits straight away: "it's weird to express yourself solo. I live to interact with other musicians." He nevertheless declares himself satisfied with the persona imposed for this recording, which is certainly a musical moment of great quality. If we compare this episode of the Jazz Sessions program with the one that was devoted to John Abercrombie, we confirm that the full solo is perceived as a test by the two musicians. And comparing how each approaches the exercise is instructive. As much as Abercrombie plays on interiority and dynamics, Bill Frisell grants himself the right to visit various styles, from country accents to electronic delirium with echo chambers, without deviating from Hendrixian rage or from a melodious folk on the last two titles. The man who performed alongside Paul Motian, Joe Lovano, John Zorn, Marc Johnson and Tim Berne has sufficiently demonstrated over the years that he was without blinders; that he saw "no hierarchy between musicians and genres, between Segovia and Robert Johnson, between Hendrix and Wes Montgomery" (he also takes a Johnny Cash CD out of his bag), because according to him, only one's imagination counts. His deep quest, his truth, he expresses as follows: "Each time I pick up the instrument, it's a struggle, I want to find my own voice; it's the struggle to find a sound as my hero musicians knew how to: Monk, Rollins, Coltrane, Dylan". Philippe Lesage.
