- Summary:
- Pope of the swing craze in the 1930s in New York, Benny Goodman left his mark on a good part of the twentieth century thanks to incredible titles like "Sing, Sing, Sing (With a Swing)," "Let's Dance," and "The World Is Waiting For The Sunrise." With his boundless energy and subtle arrangements, his clarinet playing will stand out next to a host of performers including the young Billie Holiday and the complicit Peggy Lee. He will also exert a notorious influence on contemporary composers like Yom, the free electron of klezmer jazz, and Joe Jackson who will release, in the middle of the New Wave period, the vintage compilation Jumpin' Jive. A unifying link between musicians, whatever their religious beliefs or skin color, Benny Goodman is filmed here in Sweden and delivers a good summary of his discography. We find various standards, immortalized in the form of big bands and combos, and in particular an invigorating medley incorporating the famous "Stompin' At The Savoy." Recorded at the end of his career, the famous American composer and performer expresses, in front of the Scandinavian public, an unspeakable nostalgia shrouded in musical memories and Yiddish melodies: prepare to be touched.
