- Summary:
- From 1650 to 1789, Paris and Berlin weren't on equal terms: while Paris was the largest city on the European continent, Berlin was merely emerging as a future capital. This first episode explores how the French kings - and Louis XIV in particular - established the foundations of modern town planning and in so doing exerted a profound influence on the small town of Berlin. However, up until the French revolution, Paris remained the model for Berlin: the French city's new monumental entrance gates built during the reign of Louis XVI inspired constructions such as the Brandenburg Gate, which later became the very symbol of Berlin.
