- At the start of the third episode, Berlin is still merely the capital of a moderately important kingdom while Haussmann's enormous undertaking has made Paris the most modern city of its era. A few months later, following a blitzkrieg during which France suffered a crushing defeat, Berlin became the capital of the most powerful empire of its time, whereas the French capital was humiliated by its defeat.
