Presented by paediatrician Guddi Singh, The Wonderful World of Babies will bring together Britain's top experts in child development and dozens of families from across the country to conduct the most far reaching and comprehensive research into the first two years of life, revealing the inner workings of a baby's mind and the complexity and genius of how we all grow up. Episode two looks at the latest research into how we build social relationships. The team set up a series of experiments about how babies become social and learn to relate to the people around them. Starting with a fundamental question - how do we make our very earliest connections with others? Do we have to learn or are we programmed to bond from birth? To find out, the show heads out to the home of a newborn baby, just one week old. This episode also explores the bonds which babies make to other people and how they decided who to trust, how adults react to a baby's cry, the effect and purposes of laughter, the development of self-recognition and how babies develop and display empathy.
