Summary:
One of the most popular classical music concerts in the world, watched and listened to by an audience of many millions around the globe. The 2009 Last Night brings you Alison Balsom in a concerto by Haydn and Sarah Connolly in a famous lament by Purcell. Oliver Knussen's Flourish is complemented by new fanfares that feature in a link up with Last Night festivities around the country. This year the programme also marks 50 years since the deaths of Albert Ketelbey and Gerard Hoffnung (the latter in Arnold's uproarious piece including parts for vacuum cleaners, floor polishers and rifles, written for the first Hoffnung Music Festival in 1956). Presiding over the mass of musical forces on stage, and not to mention the enthusiastic audience is the BBC Symphony Orchestra's David Robertson.
