- Summary:
- Marking his 70th birthday - on 5th January 2001 - this is a rare opportunity to catch a glimpse of the life of one of the world's greatest living pianists. Alfred Brendel's interpretations of the great Austro-German composers, Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann and Liszt are renowned for their intellectual penetration and expressive power. In this exclusive portrait, Brendel removes all his masks for the very first time. Filmed around his London home, Brendel will reveal and talk about key recitals and concertos in his career, as well as the remarkable watercolours, gouaches and drawings he created as a teenager before choosing the piano as a career. All in all, the programme will provide the viewer with an intimate sense of the pianist's inner world. Piano pieces performed: Sonata in E flat major, Hob. XVI/49 / Joseph Haydn (21:18) ; Sonata in C minor, K. 457 / Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (22:00) ; Impromptu in G flat major, D. 899, no. 3 / Franz Schubert (5:47).
