Summary:

The University of Houston Clear Lake has a long-standing presence in a South Texas Prison, the Ramsey Unit. Inmates at this unit are able to finish both BA and MA degrees, granted by UHCL. In 2015 and 2016 I was able to follow one of the instructors, Shrerekha Subramanian, to the unit to film their semester final exams. At the time, the resulting videos were presented at a conference at the university and in May 2018, I turned them into a short-form documentary and a promotional video for the school. I am the director, cameraman and editor on both films. This film is unique in its subject matter. I do not know of any other short documentary film about university-level teaching in the U.S. prison system. Through a rare opportunity of access with a camera to a prison unit, this is not only a film "about" the subject at hand, it also gives the inmates a rare opportunity to make their voices heard.
