Summary:
This video clip, captured from an electron microscope, shows a sequence of energy-filtered images of a blob of aluminum-silicon alloy. The filter highlights excitation levels of "volume plasmons" (oscillating groups of electrons) in the sample. The first sequence shows the solid alloy as a hazy dark sphere surrounded by lighter (high excitation) liquid alloy. The second shows what happens when the microscope beam is tilted in various directions. The solid particle (just barely visible by the dark ring on its edge) moves to follow the center of the beam. (Dark outer region is part of the microscope aperture.) Final sequence shows control of two separate particles.
