- Summary:
- This is the story of Walter Tull - the first black officer to serve in the British army in the First World War, telling the story of his life, in his final moments. Having gained a reputation for himself in the army through his leadership skills, and his ability to motivate others in the most horrifying situations, he discovers that he is being put forward for officer training. Walter faces a difficult decision - to agree to the training would mean opening himself up to more of the prejudice to which he has been exposed all of his life. In Scotland, the training proves to be every bit as challenging as Walter envisaged. The other recruits are all young and ambitious, and from far more privileged backgrounds than Walter. Can he prove himself when it seems that everyone is against him?
