Summary:
This is the third marchen (fairytale) in my three week rotation. This one is Aschenputtel (Cinderella). In this story a girl is tortured by her step sister for years. When she finally sees a chance to get out of that terrible house, her stepmother won't allow it. She has a magical bird/tree give her a dress so she can go to a party. She ends up leaving early and ditching the guy she went to see. He tricks her into losing a shoe. He then tries searching for the girl who can fit into the shoe. The stepsisters try to fit their feet into the shoe, but end up mutilating themselves instead. Cinderella eventually gets to try on her own shoe. Surprisingly it fits. They get married and live happily ever after. The stepsisters, however, get their eyes plucked out at the wedding. These are children's stories. :) Read the original text here: http://germanstories.vcu.edu/grimm/aschen.html.
