Summary:
The Sea Cadet recounts descriptions of ports of call, impressions and feelings of the dead son of the author. This unpublished verse narrative describes a last voyage, from Cowes in the Isle of Wight to Sydney, Australia, and back. Based on letters the boy wrote home, and specimens brought back from the voyage with him, the work can be dated by note 4 at the end of the book (p.135). Graphite and color wash portrait of the sea cadet, manuscript title-page decorated with coronet, vignette and British flags. There are 12 full-page original watercolor drawings of places along the voyage, from the Isle of Wight to Sydney Australia, one in grisaille; with 76 vignettes in the text, 40 in grisaille, and 36 in color, of iconic places and natural history specimens of the voyage. The full-page illustrations include images from the voyage, and from the cadet's childhood: Norris & Seymour Castle near Cowes (p. 27); the Club House at Cowes (p. 31); Portland (p. 37); Funchal Madeira (p. 53); Funchal Madeira (p. 55); the Governor's House, Funchal (p. 58); the Loo Rock in 1821 (grisaille) (p. 60); The Island of Teneriffe. 90 miles! (p. 66); Orotavo (p. 70); the Mill Stream, Lock's Mills (p.95); Sydney Cove, Port Jackson, New South Wales(p. 121); and the Anchorage at Sydney N.S.W. (p. 124). Volume is inscribed on the verso of the front free endpaper: "This Book was Wrote by My Friend Lieut. Evans. C.J.F." Original pagination on top of text pages; all references in this record are modern pagination in pencil on the bottom of all pages.
