- Summary:
- An Uncertain Pleasure is an exhibition that focuses on a specific aspect of the prestigious art collection of the visionary, former Geneva gallerist, and passionate collector Pierre Huber: its time-based media works. This exhibition witnesses the development of video art. The term "time-based media" describes works that unfold temporarily. Includes film, video, mono and multichannel video installations, slideshows, multimedia environments, sound, performance and digital art. Both the arts of time and globalization play an essential role in Pierre Huber's extensive collection. From its beginnings, Huber was one of the few private collectors to fervently support new media, as well as one of the protagonists in the globalization of the art world. This phenomenon facilitated the encounter of several regions with different heritages, political and social contexts marked by cultural diversity, migration, information flows and local conflicts. Spanning four decades, the exhibition is a testament to the development of video art. It includes artists crucial to the history of the medium, such as Nam June Paik and Tony Oursler, or foundational figures for the development of conceptual art, such as Robert Barry or On Kawara. Some key works include those produced between the 1990s and the 2000s by revolutionary artists from North America and Europe such as Fischli & Weiss, Catherine Sullivan, Francesco Vezzoli, Rodney Graham, Paul Pfeiffer, Isaac Julien or Tino Sehgal; but also from Asia, Central and South America, Africa and Oceania, such as William Kentridge, Kimsooja, Shirin Neshat, Candice Breitz, Manon De Boer, Tracey Moffatt or Mariko Mori.
