"Sexual assault is a traumatic experience for any woman. Furthermore, many victims who tell others about their assault must endure a "second assault" in the form of negative reactions, such as victim blaming and disbelief. One third to two thirds of victims may experience such reactions, which have negative mental and physical health effects on the victims. The first edition of this book was widely praised and recommended as a resource for clinicians and researchers. In this completely rewritten edition, the author draws on her ongoing research to discuss when and to whom survivors talk about their rape experiences. The chapter on social reactions to survivors in the first edition has been expanded into two chapters: one focusing on the types of social reactions and another on the impacts on survivors. In addition to updating the first edition chapter discussing ways in which advocates and clinicians provide formal support to survivors, a new chapter on informal supporters is included. Along with information from her own work, the author provides an up-to-date review of other research on related issues such as theories of rape and disclosure, rape myths, and the appropriate ways to conduct interviews with survivors.
